The Preacher, the Spider, and the Web

Well, the preacher said to the spider,
“You’ve only got to catch one soul
to make the whole long weaving
worth your time.”

The spider just smiled, sat back,
and said, “Well, that depends
on the length
of your line.”

The preacher, his name was Harlow, said,
“Well, a man may lose track of which cards he’s got,
but he damn sure better remember to watch every hand
that goes into his pot.”

The preacher and the spider
relaxed in the morning sun;
both agreed that the real trick is in what the trickster gets
not in what the trickster’s done.

You can spin black cloth,
white-collared or not,
but at the end of the day,
all that matters is
what your cloth has caught.
