trying to
shape wrought
iron reality
into a
soft tree
that he
could tend,

only to
meet gravity

Balls himself)
face to face
like a bug
meets a windshield,

only to find
his circumstances
indifferently immutable,

he bowed
his head
to the
moon and
held out
his hands
and said,

“okay,
i’ve had
enough
sanity for
10 lives;

for whatever’s
left of

for whatever time is
given me
