after 40
years trying
to make
things happen
the old-
fashioned way,

trying to
shape wrought
iron reality
into a
soft tree
that he
could tend,

only to
meet gravity
(ol’ Barnacle
Balls himself)
face to face
like a bug
meets a windshield,

only to find
his circumstances
indifferently immutable,

he bowed
his head
to the
moon and
held out
his hands
and said,

“okay,
i’ve had
enough
sanity for
10 lives;

for whatever’s
left of
this 1
for whatever time is
given me
before I
die

let me
ride the
Other Side.”

Madness
tipped its hat, stepped aside, and said,
“Come on in, my boy!
Come in!”
