One of the things that fascinates me about Morrison is how seriously he took his role as artist. It was kind of a part of the times that musicians were expected to be “counterculture” and to project the image that they were serious artists who didn’t care about materialism or fame…most of this was utter bullshit, far as I can tell.
Morrison was the real deal, though. He said it, and he meant it. Neil Young also seemed pretty sincere, but I don’t know if anybody of that era could lay claim to the kind of authenticity that Morrison had as an artist, and as a “shaman.”
What an endlessly fascinating human being.
