I often look at these people who throw themselves all over the internet and think, “man some day that is going to e like one of those tattoos of the name of someone you broke up with.”
I blame it on what I call teh “Steve Jobs Myth,” which is this “pay ANY price to ‘make a dent in the universe’ because that’s where real satisfaction is!” Which isn’t to say, of course, that Jobs’ achievements are comparable to someone getting naked on Instagram, but just this modern obsession with “making a mark no matter the price” as being the avenue to fulfillment and happiness.
It’s a lie old as humanity, yet one which forever reason continues to persist, no matter what.
I loved what you said about “service.” That is exactly how I see this whole thing. I’m not a big “confessional” writer or autobiographer. I’m a fiction, history, and journalism guy…but those rare moments when I reveal my own life, it’s always because I think somehow someone may be able to benefit from the story.
Anyway, excellent piece.
