I don’t read this as a piece on romantic love…instead about a some worldly purpose that seduced and then abandoned and left the soul searching, again…a passing ambition masquerading as an existential direction…not sure if intended or not but that’s how I read it.
Dylan did that a lot…many if not most of his love songs aren’t actually about love for a physical woman…love for archetypes, dreams, angels…etc.
This is a really beautiful poem.
