I came by the story of Lieutenant Ralph William Duby via a strange route.

It started with my discovery of a rare book titled Murder of a City, Tacoma. That book’s author is listed as Jon Gold, but in reality Jon Gold was a pseudonym for a man named Fred Crisman.

Fred Crisman was a living rabbit hole of High Strangeness. Trying to trace the path of his world line has proven to be a years-long quest of fascination, excitement, frustration, and, ultimately, awe that a man could simultaneously be so prominent and yet invisible.

Like Duby, Crisman was a World War II veteran. Unlike Duby, he’d been involved in everything from the first major American UFO event (the Maury Island Incident) to the JFK assassination to a late-1960s propaganda war that permanently altered the political landscape of Tacoma, Washington. Sprinkled in between all of that were dozens of strange associations and insinuations.
