Apparently, the depth of Plath's interest in the occult was largely hidden by her estate for most of this time. Similar to Maurice Nicoll, the "forgotten teacher" of the 4th Way of G.I. Gurdjieff. I just read Gary Lachman's book on Nicoll, and Lachman's research brought Nicoll's journals to his awareness. Turns out Nicoll actually had what was basically sexual obsession and some embarrassing kinks. His estate, too, wanted this kept quiet.
really makes you think...how many stories of these great historical figures are only partial retellings, with embarrassing or odd details put in the back of the closet?
